Orthoptic & Squint Clinic Instruments: A Buyer's Guide
An orthoptic clinic — the squint and binocular vision room — runs on a small, specific set of instruments that a general refraction room does not carry. There are few of them, they last for years, and they are what lets a hospital offer paediatric squint work at all. This guide covers the core list for clinics and for distributors quoting into eye hospitals.
Synoptophore (major amblyoscope)
The centrepiece of the room. A LED synoptophore presents a separate illuminated slide to each eye through two independently movable arms, so the examiner can position each eye’s target and read off the angle.
- Used for: measuring the angle of squint, assessing binocular single vision and fusion, and orthoptic exercises.
- Check when ordering: LED versus older lamp illumination (LED runs cooler and avoids bulb replacement), the slide set included, and how the arms and scales are calibrated.
- Buyer’s view: a single-unit purchase per clinic room, not a stocked-in-depth line. It is also a genuinely specialised instrument — few manufacturers build it, which matters when you’re sourcing.
Prism bars
A prism bar set gives graded prism steps in a horizontal and a vertical bar, so deviations can be measured and fusional vergence tested without swapping loose prisms.
- Used for: measuring horizontal and vertical deviations, fusional vergence testing.
- Check when ordering: that the set includes both bars, the dioptre range and step increments, and the optical quality of the prisms.
- Buyer’s view: inexpensive relative to the synoptophore and consumed by wear — a sensible line to stock rather than order to project.

The orthoptic workup borrows from the refraction room, so quote these together when you’re equipping a room from scratch:

- Teaching hospitals and optometry schools — orthoptics is on the syllabus, so instruments are bought for demonstration as well as clinic use.
