Choosing a Slit Lamp: A Practical Guide for Eye Clinics & Importers

The slit lamp is one of the most-used instruments in any eye clinic — a binocular microscope paired with an adjustable slit beam for examining the eye. If you’re equipping a clinic or sourcing units for distribution, here’s what to evaluate.

What a slit lamp does

It combines magnified, stereoscopic viewing with a focused, adjustable beam of light, letting the examiner inspect the structures of the eye from the lids and cornea through to the lens — and, with auxiliary lenses, the retina. It’s also the platform for applanation tonometry and gonioscopy.

Key things to check

Magnification

Multiple magnification steps (commonly a 2- or 5-step drum or zoom) let the examiner move from overview to detail. Confirm the available range.

Illumination

  • Beam control: width, height, angle and a rotating prism for versatility.
  • Light source: LED is increasingly preferred — cool, long-life and consistent colour; halogen remains common and warmer in tone.
  • Filters (cobalt blue, red-free) widen the range of examinations.

Optics

Look for clear, well-corrected optics with good contrast and a comfortable eyepiece with dioptre adjustment.

Type and mounting

Slit lamps come as table-mounted (Haag-Streit style or tower style) units. Make sure it pairs with your examination table or refraction chair unit and that the joystick movement is smooth and precise.

Useful accessories

  • Applanation tonometer mount for intraocular pressure measurement — see the applanation tonometer.
  • Gonioscopy lens for anterior chamber angle examination — see the gonioscope lens.
  • Imaging/camera attachment for documentation and teaching.

Buying tips for distributors

  • Source from a manufacturer for pricing and consistent supply.
  • Verify ISO/CE documentation.
  • Check spare-part availability (bulbs/LED modules, fuses) and warranty.
  • Agree MOQ, lead time and export packaging — slit lamps need careful crating.
