Vision Screening Camp Equipment: A Portable Kit Checklist
Outreach vision screening camps — school programmes, rural eye camps, occupational screening — have a different equipment profile from a fixed clinic. Everything has to travel, survive a jeep, and work without reliable mains power. This checklist is for NGOs, hospital outreach teams and the distributors who supply them.
The constraints shape the kit
Before picking instruments, note what a camp actually demands:
- Portable — packs into a case, carried by two people.
- Power-independent — battery, rechargeable or fully mechanical. Assume no wall socket.
- Fast — high patient throughput, so setup and per-patient time matter more than features.
- Rugged — repeated packing, transport and dust.
That rules in a lot of simple, mechanical instruments that a modern refraction room would skip.

What to leave behind
Camp kits fail by being too ambitious. Instruments that generally stay at base:
- Wall-mounted LED vision charts — they need mounting and power, and a drum does the screening job.
- Slit lamps, chair-and-stand units and motorised tables — mains-dependent and heavy.
- Anything whose only spare part is three weeks away.
Screening identifies who needs a full examination; it is not a substitute for one. Referral pathways to a base clinic belong in the programme plan, not in the equipment list.
Practical procurement notes
- Buy spares as consumables. Bulbs, batteries and charging leads are the usual failure points. Order them with the kit, not after.
- Standardise handles. Where instruments share a rechargeable handle type, one charger covers several heads.
- Case it properly. Fitted cases for the trial lens set and diagnostic instruments are what keep a kit serviceable after twenty trips.
- Order in programme units. If you run four teams, quote four identical kits — it makes training, spares and replacement simple.
Distributors bidding into government or NGO tenders should note that these lines are usually specified as a kit, so quoting the full list together is more competitive than item by item.
