Stainless Steel Hospital Hollowares: A Buyer's Guide
Hospital hollowares are the stainless steel workhorses of every ward, theatre and dressing room — trays, bowls, jars, drums and kidney basins. They are low-value per piece but ordered in volume, which makes them a staple line for distributors. This guide covers what importers should check before placing a hollowares order.
What the category covers
“Hollowares” is a catch-all for formed stainless steel clinical utensils. In practice buyers order across four groups:
- Procedure trays — instrument trays, Mayo trays, and surgical trays with covers for presenting and transferring instruments.
- Bowls and basins — kidney trays (emesis basins) and gallipots for fluids, antiseptics and swabs.
- Storage and sterile supply — dressing drums with vented bands, plus jars with covers for cotton and dressings.
- Reprocessing — instrument sterilisers for heat sterilisation and Cidex trays for cold chemical soaking of heat-sensitive items.
Five things to specify before you order
Most hollowares disputes come from an under-specified purchase order, not a bad product. Pin these down in writing:
- Steel grade. Ask which grade is being supplied and confirm it in the PO. Grade drives corrosion resistance and price — do not leave it as “stainless steel”.
- Gauge (thickness). The single biggest cost and quality variable. A thinner gauge looks identical in a photo and flexes in the hand.
- Finish. Mirror finish presents better; satin hides scratches in daily ward use. Pick per department, not per catalogue.
- Sizes. Most items come in a size range. Order a size matrix, not just a quantity — “50 kidney trays” is not an order.
- Seams and edges. Ask about edge rolling and how joints are formed. Smooth, crevice-free surfaces are easier to clean and hold up longer.

Packing and freight matter here
Hollowares are dense and awkward — freight can be a real share of landed cost. Two things help:
- Nesting. Trays, bowls and basins nest. Ask for nested packing with interleaving so a carton carries more pieces without scuffing.
